it took me a heartburn and acid puking during the wee hours of the morning one night to force me to face the reality that i've been overworking and subconsciously joining the rat race of the evil corporate world...just because apparently, that's how the system works.

that certainly left a bad taste in my mouth...yikes!

it brought along a domino-effect train of thoughts that prompted me to re-think just what my priorities are at this point...it's not what i'm required to do that is the problem...but it is who i have to deal with and 'People' have never been a favourite subject of mine (only god knows why i was so obsessed with psychology to study human behavior...i'm guessing it has to do with my sex therapist ambition :p)

so while i deal with bad behaviours and just plain non professionalism in a world where people are more obsessed with developing a competitive branded wardrobe rather than their own personality...i have to strive harder to keep things in balance.

and having said that, a day job is really just a day job...the more interesting stuff always happen on the sides :)

i'm on a creativity rebound and my not-so-little-anymore baby sis' 21st birthday will be a good start.

this post is dedicated to my vamploving baby sis, sheena, who shamelessly introduced twilight to me (the horror! i reacted the same way i reacted to cats and kittens : uneasy-fling-it-away-NOW-feeling).

thankfully, fortunately, bless her, she regretted it after realising what an awful writer stephanie meyer was (still is). the whole thing was super crappy so sheena changed gear to obsess about vampire diaries instead!

of course i'm a little biased. i discovered l.j. smith when i was in my teens (eons ago) and i so love the whole idea of soul mate and immortal love (yea, yea, shoot me you bitter unromantic people).

but most of all, i love the way she weaves and tells her stories. and how she adds depth and soul into each character she created, making them memorable, interesting and strong (yeap, the females too). most importantly, they didn't sparkle or sulk or appear to be forever-in-pain.

i'm not going to discuss which series is better or more successful yada yada yada because non-fad vampire lit reading people will understand and know the difference. and puhleeez, no one does vampires the way dame rice does so let's just rest it there.

brat, you can use your super imagination (thank god it was not wasted on the stupidity that is edward/bella) and see ian somerhalder saying this to you, 'kudos, kid'.

bangkok before the mess (march) pt 1

bangkok resides quite prominently on my top 10 places to visit before the curtain call at the end of my journey. even until today, it still does as i plan to go there again.

last year, my two ex-colleagues and i got us some sweet deals on air tickets to this amazing place for a late march trip this year. little did we know that we would be traveling amidst political turmoil which was quite a sad phenomenon but if one is familiar with thailand, this is hardly surprising as the nation has a history of political struggles.

when we were there, it was 'peaceful demo' phase and things were not as bad as how the media portrayed it to be. we passed by the riot-site on a few occasions and even had red shirts supporters dancing along to music just across the street from our hotel and it was not violent at all (this is of course during the early stages of the protest).

despite this, i took away with me not the ugliness of such a vibrant and unique city but of its rich heritage and unapologetic personality that has charmed her way into my heart.

i am bound for a return.

terrific thursdays!

due to my insane freakiness for order / structure and also no thanks to my habit of hoarding lots and lots of inspiring images and words, i operate this blog via a posting system, even in its randomness :)

i post certain things on certain days to kind of keep everything in a structurised manner so that i don't overwhelm myself as it can get quite bad hahaha

so, every day is a favourite but thursdays particularly so because i usually write about or post images of two things that i am passionate about...words and tattoos.

tattoos have always been a point of interest for me as i think it is one of the most wonderful expressions of art and to have them inked on your skin is taking it to the next level. i have deep respect for artists who are in it for the art not for the glamour and people who truly appreciate this and not bearing them like some sort of symbol of cool and rebellion (which seriously, like really?). if i am talented, i would learn the art of tattooing and i would love more than anything to learn it via the traditional way.

i spent a beautiful evening with two equally beautiful people last night, my dearest and hearts, jin and eva.

we shared great conversations, lots of laughter, heart talks and just simply basking in the comfort of knowing that the space we shared was full of unpretentious love. i had a little thought, i'm here, i love these people and i'm so blessed.

that one thought sparked a train of thoughts:

these days, i no longer look very far in terms of friendships and relationships of any kind with another individual. not that i would not want great relationships with people to last but i am taking it slow and easy, letting nature take its course. should this relationship lasts, then i am extremely lucky but if it does not, then it is part and parcel of life.

perhaps you can say i am a little pessimistic (hey i did say i suffer from an extreme case of anomie right? ) but i think i am just being realistic. i just got tired and numb after many years of being angry and trying to understand why people choose (yes, it IS an option) to be the way they are.

let's step back a little bit into my past (if you want la) and take friendship for example, it takes two hands to clap, so the saying goes. everyone can say this but can even half of them walk the talk? i doubt it. in the past i've shared this 'both sides' efforts in friendship' talk with people who nodded furiously in agreement but the next thing you know, nodding their heads was the the only action they took.

some of my friends whined about how we haven't seen each other for a long time (because i realised i was always the one making effort and i had enough and stopped) and started getting emotional and then afters, when i suggest we meet, below happened. true story. no cgi effects or whatsoever. you can see how people can be super irritating.

me (layaning, maybe still got hope) : how about tomorrow?

whiny friends : too sudden already, you nawer say earlier.

me : err...this weekend?

whiny friends : aiya sorry, have something on.

me : next weekend? 2 weeks advance already wor.

whiney friends : wait, i think i got something going on.

me (going to give up soon) : okay, how about next month then?

whiney friends : maybe can, wait let me see, i think i cann..eh
wait! aiyo so sorry, cannot also...hahahaha

me (wurtthefuk) : how about you tell me when you free then.

whiney friends : okay, okay, eh how about weekdays, after work
la, maybe let me see, aiya don't know what
time i leave office everyday...

and then there are those who are dating and good gawd, to spend maybe just a couple of hours of yum cha session or hang out with them sans arm ornaments is like pulling them off life support machine while they are consciously alive (me thinks: when spice girls sang 2 become 1, i think these people took it literally).

now, now, i love love.

i understand coupledom, i too experience the need to want to be close to my partner all the time, to hang on to every single word he says (oh, so funny! so smart! so dumbfucked!), to smell him, to want to play the 'small woman' to his 'big man', to want to spend every moment, every minute, every second of the day with this 'i am sooooooo in love with you but afraid the world may not see it so i must bulk up my
propagandic effort and shuff it down others' throats' person.

but seriously...you have your entire lifetime to be with this man. i am happy that you found someone you love and loves you back, someone to spend the rest of your life with but i love you too and i appreciate and treasure our 'us' time.

no, i'm not some psycho needy friend, i just prefer your company when you're you and not when you're being someone's other half. despite all your claims about you being still you even when your other half is around, trust me, i can tell the difference.

i don't discount the fact that i myself will be all lovey dovey with my man but my world does not just revolve around him so he won't appear at EVERY FREAKING hang out that we have and it wouldn't mean that i love him any less OR that i'll die (no one ever dies from partnerabsencekiosis.

it's just that...you're a part of my world and i sure hope i'm a part of yours too. so, aside from birthdays and eventful festivities, i would like and prefer it very much if you be a good friend and know that i deserve good quality alone time with you too (because...and if things turn out bad between both of you, chances are, you'll be running to people like me).

the reason why all these got to me was that i am super big on friendship, i still am and it is very important to me. i believe in being consistent and treasuring a genuine friendship.

every relationship that i form of any kind is not on a superficial/shallow level, every connection i make is intense and i really want to be there with that person so in the past, i get angry, miserable and disappointed a lot. i was not able to tolerate anything less than a 100% effort. i have the same set of expectations for myself too because i don't believe in being a hypocrite, i expect the same level of efforts from me when i'm with my friends.

these days...

i still feel the same, i still have the same expectations, the only difference is, i'm not so hard on myself anymore. i am more relaxed and not so uptight like before (except when it comes to arm-ornaments-related-issues that i believe if not handled with the right amount of balance and sensitivity, will threaten the survival of a great friendship so, for this tiny little part, the same rules apply).

i tell myself, it's okay, i don't need to drive myself crazy and be angry because people are just the way they are. you just can't change a person and mold that person into someone you would like them to be. similarly, i would get upset if i am not given the space to be who i am. but that does not mean that i am okay to tolerate their nonsense.

no man is an island, we need people around us, we can't survive by ourselves but that does not mean that i let people who don't appreciate me take advantage of my friendship. for those who genuinely care and have stayed on with me, i am grateful that they are in my life until today. for those who don't, we don't need to be friends, we can both move on with our lives and i am okay with that. you don't even need to 'drop by and say hi once a while' because honestly, i'm rather sucky at pretending that we are the best of friends when we have not spoken in months or years.

i'm no longer angry or disappointed, i've come to accept that well, we are just different and we don't share the same wavelength no more and it's not a big deal. it's just life. i'm letting you go and i leave it to whoever/whatever it is that is out there to see if we are meant to be friends for life.

so right now, i only 'put in the works' for those who matter and let go of the rest because i believe that, only if you want to be here, you'd really make the effort to be here. if not, i'll be hearing chorus of excuses and insincerity from you over and over again and that my 'friend', is NO music to my ears.

i've been following a great illustrator, kris' blog a couple of months back and her work inspires me.

so much so that for my best friend's birthday recently, i asked a favour from a colleague to help change an old group picture into a cartoonish one as a birthday gift and one of kris' girls became the inspiration to be modeled after for one of us in the cartoon photo.

i'll share more of this when the designer finishes 'improving his colour palette' which i thought was unnecessary as the initial result was already amazing but he insisted due to his 'designy perfection' hahaha.

see kris' work for yourself and tell me they are not beautiful.

i'm just going to say it...sometimes, i feel that life is not worth living...okay, i'm lying.

i feel that way all the time.

it's funny how everyone goes on saying 'how fragile, this thing we call life' and yet its fragility has yet to come for me although i must say, i'm quite ready for it.

i'm not naturally a yappy yappy waggity wag person...i suffer from an extreme case of anomie peppered with the illusion of optimism and harsh brutality of what's really real at random times that i might as well just do me a favour, roll over and die.

but i try.

i try to survive with less angst, less disappointment, less misery and just less everything negative.

i try to always embrace life with all its imperfections.

for a body that may never grace a victoria secret's runway, i've come to accept and learn to love it even more now because of what it allows me to do. my body keeps me alive and that deserves a hellavu more respect than i ever gave it in the past. right now, i love it whichever form it may take.

for a brain that failed to accommodate my marine biologist dream, i'm grateful now that i embarked on a different path and gained so much more in return. (although i still wanna save the sea animals!)

for a family that is based on a typical asian structure but love me and accepted me no matter what, i know i'll love my kid with the same unconditional love but with hugs, i love u's and kisses.

for friends that i've learnt to let go, i gained new ones of whom i am able to share beautiful conversations with.

for a heart that has bled (yes, must be very drama wan here) for a man i thought was so insanely beautiful, inside and out, to love another just like you is an insane act.

for the very same man who broke my heart (yeap, still keeping the manner here peeps), i've learnt that i am strong because i survived the misery you put me through and emerged with a new found perspective on love, that it should always be with someone who deserves me.

for life with all its drama mamas, you make me human.

for a couple of years some time ago during college and uni days, i helped out at my aunt's kindergarten doing almost anything from teaching to conducting workshops to deciding/buying costumes for the kids' annual concerts to baking kuehs and cakes to bullying the kids at the kindies.

the most joy i had was not teaching a bunch of kids although that would be a most favoured answer to go awww over but nope...kids are adorable disasters, cute but disasters nonetheless. running all over town in search for concert costumes was one of the greatest thing that happened during my 'tenure' and as i was looking through old photos (as always), i stumbled upon these :)

i had an awesome momsome weekend!

yesterday was so full of fun that i am still recovering from the weekend high!

a bunch of us went on a mini road trip to savour the much talked about beggar chicken at jugra after waiting for a year! all thanks to our super friend, kseng (who by the way, booked a table, ordered dishes, drove and even played a much appreciated tour guide for the day), we tasted super yummz food, totally enjoyed an impromptu beach hang out, impromptu dinner at morib and shared lots and lots of laughters and love ;)

this chicken was just absolutely delicious! the meat was right, the sauce was great and the method of cooking was very interesting! it involves clay, charcoal and a very hot room!

fresh, juicy lala (clams) at morib.

this was why my sunday turned out beautiful...amazing people that i love!

if you don't love the body you're in, that's when you deprive yourself of the greatest love of all.

i truly believe and embrace that.

i've come a long way since having a love/hate relationship with my body and i've finally made peace with me. i've come to terms with the fact that i can be fat, thin or in between at different stages of my life and it's not such a big deal. in the end of the day, i have to be comfortable in whatever form my body may take. only then can i truly say i love me, and all parts of me.

i've many people around me who whine that they are too fat, too thin, too short, too tall, too whatever else. we complain all the time about our imperfections and we are delusional about what perfection is. we are conditioned to think that perfection is when you get the thumbs-up and approval from the likes of shallow minded individuals, media, conventional perceptions of how a body should ideally look like etc. but hey, there is NO such thing as an ideal body, if there is, wouldn't all of us be born the same? like some damn dolls mass produced by some factories?

well here's the thing, what we know about the body is only 2 opposite extremes, either you are Camp Chubbs or Camp Stick, which is a rather narrow way to look at things. you have people advocating plus-sized models on the runway to represent the 'real women' while designers defending size 0 models and all this size mumbo jumbo which again, is arguing the 2 extremes.

we come in different shapes and sizes and we should just embrace that. we need to realise that it is okay to be thin, athletic, fat, toned, apple shaped, pear shaped, durian shaped, hour glass, wall clock or just any other objects that we apparently resemble when some of those stuff are man-made ironically (all these labels are pure bullshite really). this is our body and we love it all the same. we should learn how to appreciate that this body is keeping us alive, keeping us healthy instead.

i've had my own fair share of subjecting my body to ridiculousness after high school in order to lose weight to fit into some sorta accepted weight-frame and i did arrive at what i set out to achieve but i wasn't happy. i gained the weight back 2 years later, subjected it to more torture afters and lost weight again. i cannot undo what i have done but i can change the way i treat my body right now. i have come to accept that i can be in whatever forms but most importantly i must be healthy. there will be stages in my life where i'll be thin, fat, toned or whatever that comes in between but i'm going to be okay with that and love me all the same.

love begins with oneself and we shall never forget that.

obviously there's nothing much i can do about the partial nudity here peeps...i can't crop it out of its context...the reason why this tattoo looks awesome is because that creamy skin fills the body of the birds perfectly (me thinks) and those squeezed-boobies-with-arms pose just adds more 'volume' and femininity to the overall image...kinda like a fruitful background lol and yes how can i NOT credit the right adornment of the perfect knickers? so, deal with it.

the whole family went to morib (although it has a proper name, we always refer to one of our favourite seafood restaurants as 'morib' for its location) for lunch to celebrate a belated father's day last weekend. i would like to expand on this and explore more on a few favourite dishes but i shall do that at ateventures! later.

so anyhoos...

ah poh -maternal grandmama- tagged along and it was such a blessing! for my ears, my imagination and above all she was such a great source of inspiration!

she told us she almost died 3 times, beaming with the kind of pride that only one who escaped death thrice can have...grinning.

snow white's poison apple

someone in the village brought back an apple which was a rare fruit during that time and placed that foreign fruit on the top of a shelf. no one was supposed to touch it but being the curious and mischievous little kid that she was, she couldn't resist and attempted to reach it using a ladder. another kid was telling her not to and was tugging at her pants...a little too hard and she fell. she was totally knocked out and was unconscious for awhile. neighbours who found out 'pronounced' her dead and did nothing to revive her (this is quite a disturbing but totally understandable action as during those days, death is a common occurrence as folks back then didn't have much access to medical care, knowledge etc). my greatgrandmama came home much later from work and actually thought ah poh was being lazy, lying around...she scolded her and shook her, demanding that she wakes up and only discovered what happened when neighbours came and asked her why was she shaking a dead child?!

ah poh even showed us a scar below her chin proudly, "i'm not bluffing you wan, you see, you see" she said.

the white cat & the squirrel

(the below story was told to ah poh by greatgrandmama)

she was ill and down with a serious sickness of which symptoms she can't seem to remember and a disease that no one in the village has ever encountered before. she did remember lying in bed, feeling very very sick and could not get out of bed at all and greatgrandmama has tried everything that she knew and experimented with many other methods shared by neighbours and villagers but nothing is waking ah poh up from her state. then one day, the family cat was out prowling and brought home a dead squirrel, it laid the squirrel next to ah poh and kept mewing non-stop. greatgrandmama heard the cat and traced the mews back to where ah poh was and was surprised to see the dead squirrel. the cat kept 'gesturing' to greatgrandmama by looking at the squirrel, looking at her, mew, looking at ah poh, looking at squirrel again, mew, looking at her (all in random order but i got what ah poh was trying to say). greatgrandmama took that as a sign and cooked the squirrel (ah poh actually told us the ingredients used and how was it prepared...family of food business, making inappropriate food-related comments is a norm) and fed her...and she got better! (the cynical me has doubts over this story but poh gave such an exciting and expressive narration that i'll let the doubts lie hehe)

it did seem that ah poh was quite the mischievous kid. once, during a hide & seek game, she hid in a dark corner somewhere behind a massive pile of sticks and she believes that it was a tight space where breathing was quite difficult and she passed out. no one knew where she was and a search party was launched...she reckoned that she was possibly unconscious for a good few hours before she was found!

at the end of her storytelling session, she laughed about it and brushed it off as 'you know la, one of the stories from those days' but for me, it was such a great feeling...i felt like a little kid, amazed by stories of faraway lands, of mythical creatures and everything magical!

she even told us afters that she ate monkey's meat before and it was super delicious but she has never and will not eat monkey's brain...and she also casually told us that "last time folks eat everything wan...anything that you can find...but there's only 2 animals we won't eat, cows and cats...cows cry you know when you kill them". her village people won't eat cats because apparently killing cats is an uneasy feeling...according to her, they said that cats don't just die...their glassy wide eyes penetrate deep into your soul...too spooky!

sometimes, i stumble upon something awesome and as i read on about it, my interest gets gradually piqued until it reaches a crazy high...and then tiba-tiba...nombor yang anda dail tiada lagi dalam perkhidmatan

this is exactly what happened when i found a super awesome tattoo artist, jeff gogue who does breathtakingly beautiful work with such great details and colours that i resent not being born with a silver spoon...(so that i have all the money in the world to fly to where he is and have him tattoo me which if translated into malaysian ringgit = downpayment for a mid-range local car)
